Bouncing back from divorce and saving for college:

“I had gone through a divorce and I wanted to get a clear picture where my finances were. In particular I wanted to start saving towards my son’s college fund and didn’t know how to manage my other priorities to do that.  Also when I was going through my divorce it really hurt my finances; it brought my bank accounts down to zero and I had to take on some credit card debt.  I so was worried that might happen again; it I felt like I had PTSD.

I liked working with Christine because she is very approachable and relatable. I was telling her my worries and problems and she understood – she understood how anxious I was and that it felt like PTSD. I never once felt judged. I went with her because I didn’t think I would get that at a big firm.  Also she gives you this spreadsheet tool that this is genius. It changed my relationship with money and showed me exactly how to hit my goals in black and white. I saw that, yes, they really could happen.

Since working with Christine, I was absolutely able to start saving for my son’s college tuition, I paid off my credit card, and I have several months’ worth of savings in my account. I am more knowledgeable about keeping my retirement on track as well. I know how to be smart about all of it, so I don’t get the anxiety that I did before. That cloud hanging over my head is gone. I have more knowledge and more control of what everything is and where everything is going to. I feel 100% more at peace with my finances.”

Overcoming procrastination to pay off 10 years of credit card debt in 1 year:

“Paying off credit card debt was on my list of things to do for too many years without making progress. This seemed like something I could tackle if I had somebody holding my feet to the fire. But I was hesitant at first; I told myself that the concern about time commitment and level of effort on my part. Those concerns were erased quickly when I saw how quickly we moved through our status checks.

But those were really surface concerns; the deeper concern was underlying pride. I did not want to admit I had let my finances slip for about 10 years. The pride of admitting that I was not taking care of what I thought could be easily manageable kept me pushing off financial coaching.  Finally admitting I needed the help to make it a priority is what got me started.
Working with Christine gave me a plan of attack to pay off my debt. Before, I had no plan before that other than just telling myself I would do it – which I never did. Accountability was missing in my approach to financial planning prior to meeting with her.  Christine brought structure, routine and accountability.

She was sure to customize the plan to my specific motivation. She asked certain questions multiple times to make sure we were circling back to my needs, my motivation, and what I was really trying to drive toward rather than just yielding to common wisdom.  That helps me a lot in tackling the plan she put in place. I really appreciated the way Christine weaves in recent study about patterns and habits into the plan; I know the psychology is in there even if we don’t spend lots of time on it.

I have cut my debt by 2/3 since starting coaching. [Editor’s note: 6 months later she was completely debt-free and able to pay for her wedding with the money that was no longer going to credit cards.] It was crazy that for years prior to meeting with Christine I wasn’t doing anything to really put a dent in my debt. So to pay off that much debt is in just this past year has been amazing, it really has. I feel great that just by making small adjustments and reviewing my finances once a month, I’ve been able to pay all that off!”

Going from feeling grim about the future to excited and positive:

“I wanted to work with a coach for a few reasons.  I felt very, very grim about the future. I thought I’d never pay off my student loans. When I came to Christine, I had literally $0 for emergencies, which scared me.  I knew I needed to get my butt into gear and save some money, but I had tried to change this on my own in the past but I wasn’t able to.
I was a bit hesitant to participate in financial coaching, though, because my boyfriend is in finance and I thought maybe I should just get my information from him. But in practice, I never took his advice; it’s different when it’s coming from a loved one. It was just nice to work with Christine because she’s paid off the loans before and she knows what the anxiety of having that debt on your back is.

Working with Christine gave me the tools and accountability I needed to finally change my behavior. Knowing that every other week you’re going to have to meet with your financial coach and go over what you spent makes it so much easier to stay on track. But it wasn’t just the accountability factor that helped get me on track. That I would have probably gotten with a friend. She gave me tools and exercises to clarify my priorities and find less expensive ways to get what I wanted most – that was a big help. I don’t deprive myself because I still go out as much as I used to. I just don’t spend as much money doing it.

Since going through this process I definitely think a lot more before I pull out my debit or credit card when I do pull up my debit card now, it’s just a completely different feeling. It’s like I’m coaching myself every time I touch my card because I know the power that I have in my hand, just from the progress that I’ve made.

I feel a lot more positive about my financial future because I have new habits that are going to set me up to be successful.  Before, my student loans made me almost regretful about some of the decisions I’ve made regarding school. But I’m actually very passionate in my career and now that I have a plan, I love the choices that I’ve made. In the short three months I saved more money than I ever thought I would have in the bank. I haven’t touched it. That’s amazing to me.  I’ve just been holding onto some of those debt for years and soon the debt is just going to be being gone.  I don’t think there’s a feeling to describe it! I think it’s going to be the best feeling ever.

I’m excited about the future now. If I build these good habits I’ll be able to put 10% down on a house and maybe I’ll be able to buy a car outright. Those are the types of things I want my future and now they are within reach.”

Kara Part 2 (she had a lot to say)

Why she knows she needed a coach and couldn’t have done it on her own:

“I would definitely recommend working with Christine because I feel like a lot of people are like me they think they can do it on their own. But sometimes you just really need that accountability to develop the discipline and build good habits. You need that person telling you, “Hey, let me look at those numbers and see where you’ve been spending. You’re telling me one thing, but your numbers are telling me another.” I’ve never had anybody  say “This is what the numbers say and this is what you really need to be focusing on.”   I think we all have good intentions for it, but when we go about it our own way  we can get demotivated because it doesn’t work out or we don’t meet a milestone that we set for ourselves and then we just completely quit.

That’s how I was; I would just completely quit and say I’ll try again next month. When what I needed was somebody to help really, really ingrain those good habits- once you do something for three months in coaching it becomes habitual. The status checks she taught me to do are on my calendar and I do them every Friday it’s a priority for me to plan because when we plan we are successful.

The sessions went by so fast gone so fast and I’m just so appreciative for everything that I’ve learned. And no, I could not have been this on my own. I don’t feel like I would have held myself accountable. I don’t feel like I would have really grasped the concept of budgeting, setting goals evaluating your savings and your spending deeply. I never looked into it this way. Sometimes I catch myself saying, “Oh, I’ve tried this before.” but really what I did before doesn’t even touch this process.  It’s been so wonderful working with her. If this sounds like you, you don’t need to be all big and strong and think you should be able to do it on your own. I tried on my own too in the past, but this is the one time I succeeded.  It was definitely worth it.”

Getting her budget in gear and killing her debt:

“I’m never going to stop singing the praises of my financial guru Christine Lane. If you want to get better about your finances from saving to budgeting to planning for anything, you NEED to work with her. She really knows her stuff and by following the plan she outlined for me, I’ll be COMPLETELY free of my student loans in 2 years instead of closer to the ten years the loan companies had planned.

PLUS, she has a psychology background and totally gets the mental aspects of saving and spending. This has been huge for me to have someone realize it’s not just about the numbers. She provides accountability in a way that isn’t annoying or judgmental, while celebrating your achievements with you. She also leaves room in your budget for fun.

As a result of working with Chris, I am saving money, have my retirement plan on track, and feel more confident in my future. I have already recommended Chris to many of my friends and will continue to do so.”

Fine-tuning a solid plan for early retirement:

“I first started working with Christine to double-check financial planning information that I had learned on my own.  Christine was able to correct some of my misunderstandings and clarify some questions that I had, and she was able to help me better understand where my money was, where it was going, and what I could be doing better.  Fortunately, I was in a relatively decent financial position when I started working with her, but I was still making some mistakes that could have cost me big in the long run.

Christine was able to identify those and help me correct them quickly, before they grew into a catastrophe.  I have recommended and I will continue to recommend her to anyone who is at all unsure of their financial situation.  Even if you’re 100% sure that you know what you’re doing, I would still talk to her, because she sees things in a different light than most of us do, and she’s able to find a way to get you moving in the right direction without sacrificing your enjoyment in the process.”

Getting motivated and taking control to ditch the debt and anxiety:

“At first I was a bit concerned about participating in coaching because I thought I already had a game plan in place.  But I wanted to have more motivation for paying off debt as quickly as possible and to really put every penny of available income toward that goal. I wanted to finally break my habit of cycling through revolving debt once and for all and have this never be a problem for me ever again.

I wanted finances to be a part of my life that I am comfortable with – not something I’m constantly stressed about and ashamed of. In the past, this was an area of my life that I struggled to really take ownership of. Now, after working with Christine I feel incredibly motivated and empowered knowing there is a plan in place and I will get to this next stage where my focus can shift to accruing wealth instead of constantly struggling.

As a result of the consultations I am in the most control of my financial situation that I ever have been and am effectively working toward my goals. What I liked about the process was being held accountable for progress and to have actual momentum between calls. I liked knowing there was someone interested in and excited about my progress in this area – my debt is not something I talk about openly with my friends and family and it has been great to have a trusted confidante in this area who has a perspective to share.

Will I be wealthier next year and five years from now as a result of going through this process?  Yes! I know once I put this debt behind me I can put the same dedicated intensity toward building savings. I hope I can always keep this positive momentum. Christine is great. She’s a really approachable entry level to personal finance consultant.”

Becoming her own expert and gaining peace of mind:

“I started working with Christine because I wanted to pay off my student loans more quickly. Also, I wanted to better understand my retirement plan at work; I wasn’t sure if it would be sufficient down the road.

At first I was concerned about working with a financial consultant because I was worried about getting negative feedback and walking away from the process feeling defeated versus empowered. But working with Christine, I was really pleasantly surprised. She has a background in psychology and works that into her sessions with so I walked away from them feeling motivated. Accountability without judgement is her superpower!

On the numbers side, she helped me create a plan that allowed me to speed up the process of paying off my student loans significantly. Also, now I know what to expect from my company’s retirement plan, and know what else I can do to make myself financially secure.
This process has definitely given me peace of mind and a better understanding of personal finance; I feel empowered to make decisions for myself going forward. I know I will be wealthier in the future as a result of going through this process; it was well worth the cost. To people thinking about working with Christine I would say, just do it!”

“I run a social group in the Arlington, Virgina area for local residents in their 30s and 40s.  Most of our members are single professionals, and we host several events per month ranging from book clubs and 5K runs to happy hours and yoga.  I have had Christine speak at several events over the past year, and each event was well attended.  In fact, we had to schedule more opportunities for her to speak at because we had waiting lists for her events.

Christine really knows the material about financial stability and she is able to explain the ‘trap’ of credit card debt in a way that helped some of the attendees realize just how much they were really spending on their credit card purchases.  There were a lot of questions during and after the session that showed just how little most of us know about finances (myself included), and I know that many of the attendees went on to work with Christine one-on-one to better understand their finances and to get themselves moving in the right financial direction.

I am working with Christine not only on my own finances, but also to schedule her for additional events for my members, both for Finance 101 type of talks as well as events that dig deeper into particular subjects.  Whether you’re trying to get out of debt or trying to retire early, I highly recommend her to anyone who is interested in understanding their finances better.”

”I heard a talk that Chris made recently on the topic of money and happiness, and I was impressed by how well she synthesized all of the research and made the statistics accessible for everyone. She also has an approachable attitude and used her own experiences as examples to bring home the points of the presentation. She was open to questions and led the group discussion expertly. I highly recommend her!”

”A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of hearing Chris speak to my social group on the topic of Money and Happiness. It was fascinating to hear about the differences between what people generally think will make them happy and what actually does make them happy.

Topics ranged from what money means for someone struggling to have his or her basic shelter/living needs met to the perception of “keeping up with the Joneses” to lottery-winning fantasies. Chris also spoke about the impact of money on time, relationships, and freedom. The two portions I most enjoyed were her strategies for how to overcome our modern human tendency to sweat the small stuff and how to maximize the joy of gift giving. Afterwards, she led a lively group discussion. I highly recommend her as an insightful and engaging speaker.
